The second diet pill approved by the US FDA is QSYMIA last Tuesday July 17,2012. QSYMIA is known as QNEXA during its trial stages. The first diet pill to be approved this year is BELVIQ (Lorcaserin), its approval happened last June 27.
FDA Approval for this new weight loss drug is intended only for people struggling with obesity with more than body mass index or BMI of 27 who suffers complications like diabetes and hypertension.
If you intend to takee this drug, your doctor’s prescription is needed.
During its clinical trial stages when Qsymia was known as Qnexa several concerns where raised with respect to the side effects experienced by patients participating in the clinical trial. Among the noted adverse effects were:
- Increase heart rate
- Hyperventilation
- Anorexia
- Fatigue
- Others
Compared to the result of BELVIQ’s clinical trials, QSYMIA patients lost more pounds than those who were taking the weight loss drug Belviq.
Patients in clinical trials experienced more dramatic weight loss with Qsymia than with Belviq. On Qsymia, patients went from an average 227 pounds to 204 pounds; on Belviq, the average weight dropped from 220 to 207.
Doctors can prescribed this new FDA approved weight-loss drug to anyone including those not suffering from obesity. But currently, VIVUS, the maker of Qysmia will first offer anyone to buy Qysmia only through mail order and not yet directly via doctors.
