BELVIQ has been only the first ant-obesity drug given FDA Approval in the US for 13 years. Belviq can be sold in the near future to help almost 30 percent of Americans that are overweight or obese. It has been over a decade before the US FDA has given its approval over a new diet pill and weight loss drug, the last was for Roche’s Xenical (Orlistat).
What is BELVIQ?
The Generic Name of Belviq is Lorcaserin hydrochloride. It is manufactured by Arena Pharmaceuticals from San Diego, California. Belviq was also known for a short time as LORQESS.
Belviq is the first drug from Arena Pharmaceuticals to have given an FDA Approval.
How does BELVIQ work?
BELVIQ works as an appetite suppressant. It works on the brain by activating certain receptors that is responsible for releasing serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that triggers feelings like satiety, fullness and satisfaction. Serotonin is also responsible for certain moods.
Belviq is a highly selective receptor activator that only activates serotonin receptors that affects the appetite.
Is BELVIQ effective in weight loss?
Based on the reports submitted by Arena Pharmaceuticals to the FDA Board, almost half the patients without Type 2 diabetes who participated in various Lorcaserin clinical trials lost 5% of their original weight or an average of 12 pounds over a period of 1 year.
Over the same period of time, only 23% of the population on placebo lost significant body weight.
Who should take BELVIQ?
You will need a prescription from your doctor before you can buy BELVIQ.
Belviq or Lorcaserin is indicated for people that are classified as obese or with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher.
It can also be prescribed o overweight patients (BMI of 27 or higher) with these following conditions:
- Type 2 Diabetes
- High Blood Pressure
- High Cholesterol Count
BELVIQ should NOT be taken by pregnant women or persons below 18 years old.
Common Belviq Side Effects
BELVIQ is still has some minor side effects. Some of the most common Belviq side effects or adverse reactions found in non diabetic patients from various studies include:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- Dry Mouth
- Constipation
For diabetic patients, some of the common side effects are: head ache, low blood sugar, back pain, cough, and fatigue.
People who suffer serious side effects are asked to stop taking this new diet pill.
Patients are also asked to stop taking Belviq if they do not lose 5% of their starting weight within 12 weeks or 3 months.
For safety purposes, the Food and Drug Administration has ordered Arena Pharmaceuticals, the makers or Belviq, to conduct six more after market studies to further document the safety profile of Lorcaserin especially in the cases of heart attack and stroke.

It is projected that BELVIQ will be available in 2013. It just received its FDA Approval last June 27, 2012 and is still not for sale.
ESAI Inc., has been chosen as Arena’s partner in distributing the new diet pill in the US market.
Some health and business experts are forecasting that careful planning and execution can make BELVIQ a billion dollar product.
No clear reports from Arena when Belviq be available or how much will Belviq cost. We will update this post once the BELVIQ price has been announced.
For now, please do not buy from online drugstores and pharmacies products claiming to be Generic BELVIQ, Generic Lorcaserin and Cheap Belviq versions, for surely these drugs are fake and taking them can lead to serious health problems.
